The Presbyterian General Assembly is now being held at Derry, for the first time since the union of the Irish Presbyterians under that title.
The Irish judges on the circuit have, in almost every instance congratulated the grand juries on the peaceable state of the counties, as set forth on the face of the calendars.
O'CONNELL, according to a statement made at the Repeal Association on Monday, is "joyous and buoyant, and occupies himself with "practising gymnastics;" so that, it was added, when he comes out of prison he will have acquired not only additional strength, "but more grace of attitude."
MURDER OF LORD NORBURY.
On Thursday , at Tullamore, Peter DOLAN was tried, charged with the murder of the late Lord NORBURY. The principal evidence was that of an approver and his wife, whose statements were denied in some important particulars by the approver's brother. The jury acquitted the prisoner.
The festivities at the Pententiary are continued on an extensive scale. Every delicacy of the season is abundantly supplied by caterers of the Conciliation Hall, and, of course the repeal funds are debited with the amount. "The Martyrs" are greatly improved in personal appearance, and enjoy their good cheer, regardless of the misery of the unfortunate and deluded contributors to the repeal exchequer.
We regret to state that throughout the provinces, the opposition to the payment of local rates, and even rents, is increasing proportionably with the amount of the funds received weekly at the Conciliation Hall. No dobut there is, at this time of the year, great poverty in the country, and the pressure of such an exaction as the repeal rent must be much more oppressive than it might be at any other period.
NEW SPECIES OF INTIMIDATION.
The Freeman's Journal of the 23rd instant, in announcing the names of the grand jurors of a neighbouring county (Westmeath). has adopted a new plan for exposing and attracting public attention to the private and political opinions of several gentlemen who constitute the grand jury of that county for the present assixes.
To each name is appended one or other of the following descriptive epithets:
"Liberal," "Tory," "Doubtful," "Anything at all!"
It is not very difficult to conjecture the object of this expose.
