THE LEAGUE AND THE
The first act in the Durham Bribery Prosecutions Farce came off on Monday last, at the Quarter Sessions for this county, when, at the instigation of the Corn Law League, indictments were preferred against Messrs. WILKINSON and WARD, two of Viscount DUNGANNON’s agents, for having committed bribery at the late election of that noble lord for the city of Durham. The case was of so trumpery a character that the Grand Jury ignored the Bill.
The second act, in the shape of a money speculation, seeks by actions the assizes to recover penalties under the Reform Act for these alleged acts of bribery. In this scheme also it is to be anticipated they will be mulcted by defeat, and get their own costs to pay for their pains.
