A rather extraordinary case was heard at Salisbury on Monday. A man named READ was charged with neglecting his wife and three children. It appeared that having absconded from Salisbury he went to Cumberland, where he again married, this time to a prominent Salvationist.
Whilst there he made complaints against the postal arrangements, which resulted in great inquiry. He now stated that he heard his wife was dead, and that he was glad of it. He married again, and would maintain his second wife, but never his first one.
The Bench sentenced him to three month's imprisonment, when the man exclaimed that he would hang rather than maintain his first wife and children.
