ARLECDON FAIR AND SPORTS.

       This old established fair was held Monday. There were several cattle
exhibited, but trade was only dull. It had been considered advisable to make an
effort to revive the old fair day sports this year, which have been in
abeyance for about ten years. Messrs:

J. S. ELLIOT (hon. secretary) were appointed a committee to canvas the
district for donations, and were highly gratified at the liberal response to their
appeal, the amount collected exceeding all expectations.

       In spite of the bad weather there was a large assembly of spectators.
The surrounding farmers kindly gave permission for a hound trail, and prizes
were offered for various other events. Details:

All Weight Wrestling, £1  10s given, D. JACKSON threw A. BRANTHWAITE twice in
succession and won.

Eight Stone Wrestling, £1  10s given, 1 W. DOBSON, Lamplugh. 2. T. HOLLIDAY,
Asby, 3 and 4, J. KELLY, Frizington, and E. WATSON, Salter.

Mr. Wm. BRANTHWAITE, Asby was the referee for wrestling, and Mr. Edward LAMB,
Kirkby and Mr. Wm. J. STEPHENSON officiating as judge and timekeeper for the
pigeon sweep. The other duties were performed by members of the committee.
