WORKINGTON v. BLACK DIAMONDS.
Played on Saturday on the Ashfield ground, Workington, before a large
attendance of spectators. The game was at once fast and exciting, Workington
being the aggressors, and lively play ensued in front of the Diamond's goal.
Jack SMITH soon scored, and from a penalty Dick SMITH added a second.
Play on the resumption was very rough, and the referee gave Workington a
second penalty, which proved fruitless. ANDERSON was set off the field for fouling
J. SMITH, and the game continued rough. The Diamond's got a free kick and
rushed a goal through. After this Workington held the upper hand and Dick SMITH
scored twice. On the resuming Pete SMITH made a grand run and scored the fifth
Workington kept on attacking, and WOOD and SMITH nearly scored. The
Diamonds then pressed and lively play ensued, but the Workington defence
prevailed, and RILEY put in a shot which skimmed the bar. The play remained mostly in
front of the Diamond's goal. From a penalty HULLOCK scored the sixth goal,
and afterwards HULLOCK and Jack SMITH each scored for Workington.
Result: Workington 8 goals; Black Diamonds, 1.
CUMBERLAND SHIELD - SEMI-FINAL TIE
KIRKLAND UNITED v. MOSS BAY EXCHANGE.
At Frizington. Moss Bay won the toss and at once invaded, off side
spoiling. From a centre Crawford LEE scored the first goal for United. A corner
to United proved fruitless, and a miss by DEAKIN let in DYER, who scored the
second goal. PRYTHERO scored a third, and then BIRD scored a penalty for Moss
Half-time: - Kirkland, 3 goals; Moss Bay, 2 goals. Resuming, THORPE
scored a grand goal. Result: - A draw of three goals each.
EGREMONT AND DISTRICT LEAGUE
WHITEHAVEN v. FRIZINGTON WHITE STAR.
Played on the Cricket Field, Whitehaven. The game was stubbornly
contested on the home side. MOORE was conspicuous for several good runs, and some
smart efforts were also made by the Frizington players, ARMSTRONG, the
Whitehaven goalkeeper, having hot shots to clear. The defence of both teams was sound.
