       The monthly meeting of the committee was held on Monday. Present:

       A letter was read from the Town Clerk, intimating that the following
gentlemen had been appointed by the Town Council to act upon the library
Committee for the ensuing year.

       Councillor DAVIS was unanimously elected chairman and Mr. METCALF,
hon. secretary, for the ensuing year, and both returned thanks. The book
subcommittee was reappointed as follows: Counsillors DAVIS and HANNAH and Messers
METCALF, PEARSON, SMITH. The librarian, Mr. SIMPSON reported the number of
borrowers during the month as 675, and the issues as 1,854 volumes. Accounts for
salary, coals, &c., amounting to £10 2s 6d were passed.

       The following gifts were accepted: Patent Office, 13 volumes of
abridgments of specifications. The list of papers and magazines taken in the reading
room was gone through, and it was decided to add the "East Cumberland News,"
"T. P.'s Weekly," and the "Magazine of Commerce," to those already taken.

       The date of the annual sale of papers was provisionally fixed for
Monday, the 29th inst. It was decided to close the library on Christmas Day, the
day following, and on New Year's Day, and the Reading Room on Christmas Day.
