ST. HELEN'S COLLIERY
Pumping operations are being continued at this colliery with one of Tangye's pumps. Since the pump was started on Wednesday week, the water in the mine has been reduced by 66 feet. The water has to be very cautiously taken out owing to there being an outburst of gas coming through the water, and this precaution will have to be observed until the water reaches a certain level.
GOOD NEWS FOR WORKINGTON
The Moss Bay Hematite Iron and Steel Works have succeeded in securing a large and important order of 20,000 tons of sleepers for the Santa Fe and Cordora Railway Company. This order will have the effect of starting a portion of the Moss Bay Works which has been standing idle for some length of time, and enabling employment to be given to a considerable number of men.
ACCIDENT AT THE MARSH SIDE BOILER WORKS
A workman named DUCKETT whilst engaged in assisting to remove a crane at MESSRS. ROBERTSON's, Marsh Side Boiler Works, Workington, on Monday, got his left shoulder put out of joint. DR. HODGSON attended the injured man, and he was afterwards removed to his home in Gladstone Street.
QUEEN VICTORIA is said to have been so liberal during her recent trip abroad as to excite much comment among those around her. At Charlottenburg, she gave golden snuff-boxes, diamonds, &c., to a half-dozen Princes, Princesses, and Generals, and gave liberal tips to all the servants.
