At Whitehaven Police Court, yesterday, William KENNISH, fish dealer,
Whitehaven, was charged by the Trustees of the Town and Harbour with having eleven
boxes of stinking herrings which he intended to sell for human food.
Mr. W. W. LUMB prosecuted.
Mr. MONTGOMERY, county analyst, stated that he considered the herrings quite
unfit for food, some of them being rotten.
Defendant said that he considered the fish sound both as regarded taste and
smell. He had eaten them himself.
The Bench considered the case proved, and defendant was fined £5, including
costs.
