Stockport Colliery, was charged with the manslaughter of Samuel POTT a miner.
On October 2nd the prsioner was in charge of a firing party, when a shot
missed fire, and, contrary to the Act of Parliament regulating mines, he ordered
POTT to get it out with his pick axe. While he was endeavoring to do so the
charge exploded, inflicting such terrible injuries that POTT died five days
afterwards.
Prisoner was found guilty, but being recommended to mercy on account of his
long service and good character was only sentenced to four month’s
imprisonment without hard labour.
