        THE BORDER GENTRY IN 1526. -- Sir Geroge DUCKETT, in his work which we reviewed the other day, quotes from the Cotton MS. in the British Museum the following list of "pensioners," as the Cumberland and Westmorland gentry were called who received a yearly stipend for duties performed in defence of the Borders against the Scots.  We may safely assume that they were the leading gentry in these parts three centuries and a half ago.  The sums they received are set opposite their names; we give them in modern numerals: --
