APPOINTMENT OF HEADMASTER OF WORKINGTON PUPIL TEACHERS CENTRE
The appointment of a successor to Mr. E.J. HEPWORTH, who has vacated the
headmastership of the Workington Pupil Teachers Centre on appointment as
secretary to the Workington Education Committee was effected at a meeting of
the committee on Monday evening. Sixty-nine applications were submitted to
the committee on the 22nd inst and referred to a sub-committee, consisting
of Messrs THOMPSON, MANDALE, McMULLEN and SUTTON who reduced them to four
which were placed before the Education Committee on Monday, for final
selection. The four were those of: Wm. RIGBY, B.Sc, and B.A. (Victoria),
Leeds; H.G. GOSLING, B.A. (London), and Inter. B. Sc. (London), Blackburn;
Enoch O. TAYLOR, B.A. (London), B. Sc. (London). Huddersfield; James J.
MAXWELL, B.A. (London), Bristol. The four candidates were interviewed, the
following members being present: Messrs H. THOMPSON (chairman), J.S.
RANDLES, M.P., Rev R.S. GREENE, J. McMULLEN, W. LEITCH, C. H. WALKER, J.
MORRISON, W. HOLMES, J. MANDALE, and F. HALL. In the result, Mr. TAYLOR was
appointed nem con (?). Mr. TAYLOR's record is as follows: Pupil teacher for
four years; exp.t. One year; two years at Borough Road; six years
certificated assistant; tow years Higher Grade School, and 3½ years at
Technical College (including P.T.'s centre); B.A. (London), B.Sc. (London).
Sciences: Mathematics (all stages), 3 sciences (honours); 6 adv., 1st class;
City and Guild's certificate for wood work (1st class), "D" (1st class);
excellent testimonials from S.G. RAWSON, D. Sc. (Principal of Training
College); R. MONTGOMERY, B.A., head of Higher Grade Schools, and from Rev R.
BRUCE, D.D. (chairman of London School Board), as to teaching ability and
The Committee, at the same meeting, confirmed the appointment by the
Managers of Mary Kelley as certificated teacher to St. Patrick's Schools.
